Truck drivers are an essential part of our economy and it’s important that we don’t take them for granted. They supply food to restaurants and grocery stores, haul massive machinery on winding roads, and deliver building materials amongst other things.

Michael Hutchings has been selected as Roane Transportation’s truck driver of the month. Michael switched to trucking when he realized that he no longer enjoyed his job. Being a truck driver aligns well with his personality, it gives him the independence and freedom to work hard and enjoy his life outside of work. We sat down to find out more about Michael, his career as a professional truck driver, and his experience working for Roane Transportation.

How did you start your career in professional driving?

I’ve been around truck driving all of my life, but I used to work in a factory and I got to a point where I hated going to work. So, I decided to go a different way and started driving.

How long have you been driving for Roane Transportation and what has your experience been like?

I’ve been with Roane Transportation for going on 4 years. I’ve learned a lot and I couldn’t ask for a better place to work.

Tell me about your position, and what is your typical day is like?

It varies a little from day to day, my routes change regularly. It’s all doable, my boss keeps it so that I can get it done. My typical day runs pretty smoothly and I get to be home every night.

With the currently high demand for truck drivers, why should someone choose to work at Roane Transportation instead of another company?

I feel that Roane takes care of their drivers. They put their drivers first.

What is your favorite thing about truck driving?

I guess my favorite part is that I’m by myself. I don’t have someone standing over me micromanaging all the time. They tell me what to do, I go do it. I get to be independent while getting the job done.

What is the most challenging part of your job?

Nothing really comes to mind, it’s pretty straightforward. You just have to be willing to put in the effort

What would you say to someone that is considering starting a career in truck driving?

It’s a different kind of lifestyle. It’s nothing fancy but I would recommend it as long as they’re willing to put forth the work and effort that’s required to do it.

What is your favorite way to pass the time when you’re on the road? Favorite music, podcasts etc.

I mostly just sight see. I run up and down interstate 40 a lot and I like to sit back and enjoy the view and take in all the scenery.

Where’s your favorite place to stop to grab a bite to eat while you’re on the road?

No, I don’t usually stop for food. I like to eat at home and I can do that for the most part since I’m home every night. The only times I like to stop is when I’m unloading, reloading, or getting fuel, that’s it.

Is there a specific city or area where you experience the worst traffic?

Atlanta for sure, I hate driving in Atlanta!

Are there any misconceptions that you think people have about truck driving?

They think everything on the road is a truck driver’s fault. They blame the trucks for the traffic but that’s usually not the case.

Tell us a little about yourself—family, hobbies, pets etc.

With this job I have time for my family and to do the things I love. I’m off every weekend so I can hunt and fish and anything else that I need to do or want to do. Hunting, fishing, and working in the garden is about all I do. I’m married and I have 3 children and 5 grandkids.
