This month, we had the great opportunity to talk with Debby Wolfe, an integral member of the accounts receivables team at Roane Transportation. Many times, when people think about transportation companies, they only think about trucks, truck drivers, and maybe dispatchers. It’s easy to forget that there are many other departments that support a transportation company with other operations, such as accounting, recruiting, training, or safety. These departments are just as vital to the company as the tractor trailers themselves. Without these other divisions of the company, the supply chain would halt, literally. Let’s learn today a little more about Debby and her role at Roane Transportation.

Tell us a little about yourself—where you’re from, family, what you like to do in your free time etc.

I am from Harriman, but have lived in Rockwood with my husband, Billy, of 43 years. We live on a farm and raise beef cattle. We have 1 daughter and 3 grandchildren, that I love spending time with.

Tell us about your role at Roane Transportation?

I worked for Roane Transportation in the late 90’s as a dispatcherMy husband and I ran our own trucking company with 15 trucks for several years. After a brief retirement, I was ready to return to work, so it was back to Roane Transportation for me. I now work in accounting. Knowing the trucking side helps with getting the paperwork correct.

How long have you been working for Roane Transportation and what has your experience been like?

I have been with Roane for almost 6 years. They are my family, and you couldn’t ask for a better place to work.

What does your typical day look like?

I spend my day tracking down paperwork from the drivers and making sure everything is in order to send to our customers for payment. I also make sure the drivers get paid correctly.

What is your favorite thing about your job?

My favorite thing about my job is my coworkers.  I also like the challenge of tracking down paperwork and solving problems. This has helped me build relationships with our customers and drivers.

What is the most challenging thing about your job?

Making sure everything is done correctly and in a timely manner.

What type of training or educational background is required for your role?

Customer service skills are a must.  You also must be self-motivated and able to multitask.

What advice would you give someone starting their career with Roane?

Listen and learn!  Stay upbeat and enjoy what you do.  You truly learn something new every day.

What is or are your biggest accomplishment(s) at Roane?

I am proud that the company and employees know they can count on me to give 100%.  I am known as the “Mom” to everyone and they in turn take care of me.

Are there any misconceptions that you think people have about the trucking/transportation industry?

I don’t think people realize how challenging it is for drivers to be away from home and family. They are always on a time schedule.  Also, there is a lot that goes on behind the scenes to keep the trucks going.

What is a fun fact about yourself maybe not everyone knows about you? Hidden talent?

I love to cook, especially for my coworkers.
