As you can imagine, a transportation and logistics company is made of many moving parts—literally and figuratively! A great company is run by many skilled individuals, including an experienced office manager behind the wheel. While she may communicate with most people through phone calls or email, Sandy Boles has a personality to match her cheery voice. We asked Sandy to share some of her experiences with us, from the office and beyond, to help us understand the important role she plays for her company.
How long have you been an employee at Roane Transportation?
I started with Roane Transportation Services on April 15, 2002…WOW, it’s hard to believe it’s been seventeen years!
Could you tell us a little about your day-to-day responsibilities as the office manager?
It’s a big responsibility, but I love my position! I take care of all of the money going to and from our company. That consists of ALL deposits with our banks, monthly reconciliations, applying payments for these deposits, and making the monthly loan payments. It’s very time-sensitive and detail-oriented work. I also do all the W-2 forms, 1099 miscellaneous forms for our contractors, and all other tax documents, including our end-of-year tax preparations. I am also responsible for filing all quarterly reports to the state for payroll. With the number of employees we manage, that responsibility alone is significant. I also do all the quarterly reports for our fuel taxes, among other things, pertaining to our trucking and logistics services.
What is the most challenging aspect of your position?
There is more than one, but I’d say making sure every single payment is applied correctly; however, I love the challenge. Like I said, it is very detailed-oriented work!
What is your favorite part about working at the company?
I can’t say enough good things about our management team. A great boss (or bosses) can make all the difference in your work environment. We also have such a great work family that really and truly enjoys spending time together. Not everyone can say that about the people they spend their time with at work. Another aspect of working at Roane Transportation that I enjoy is my commute. Easy drive, and beautiful! I get to work already in a good mood!
If we asked your coworkers about a unique/fun personal quality you’re known for, what would they say?
Definitely my big mouth and my big laugh that goes with it!
What is the most interesting job you have ever held, and how did it help prepare you for this position?
My family actually owned a transportation company that I worked at for 25 years, so I guess you could say it’s in my blood! I’ve always been involved in the business in one way or another. Eventually our company went out of business, but I never skipped a beat and applied to work at Roane Transportation Services, LLC. I have worked in every department and many positions in transportation, including dispatch. At one point I even enjoyed the role as an on-the-road driver! All in all, I think that holding these various positions has given me a great understanding for our company and respect for each department.
It sounds like a stressful job some days. How do you like to unwind after a long day in the office?
I live 25 miles away from work, and the drive home is relaxing and very peaceful due to the lack of traffic. Leaving work, I enjoy my drive home by listening to music and praying!
What do you work towards in your free time?
My position requires a lot of focus while I’m at work, but that makes my time away from work even more relaxing! When I’m not working, I enjoy time with my wonderful family, especially my grandchildren. Time spent with them is always extra special. I also love college football, especially our Tennessee Volunteers! Everyone here at work will tell you I’m a HUGE FAN!!!
You win a two-week, all-expenses-paid vacation. Where do you go, and with whom?
I wish I was packing my bags right now! Definitely an all-inclusive Caribbean cruise with my best friend that I’ve had since I was 18 years old.
If you could hire one celebrity/superhero/public figure to work with you, who would it be, and why?
Hmmm…Denzel Washington! I have always been a huge fan. He’s an amazing actor and I really enjoy all of his movies. I also think he is very smart, and seems to view life in a wise way. Who wouldn’t want to work with him?
You’re alone in the office and have your radio turned up. What’s playing?
I would likely be a local gospel station or some type of country music. Casting Crowns is my favorite group.
